How do you track your health and fitness goals?

After I learned more about the Fitbit fitness trackers and their features, I knew this tool would benefit my daily life. The Fitbit’s features could help me stay accountable, motivation and automatically track my progress. I was already tracking my health & fitness goals by paper and through myfitnesspal.com. Over time, though, our lives had grown busier. Using these methods and staying consistent were becoming more difficult day-to-day.

In 2016, that all changed when my significant other surprised me with a Fitbit Charge 2 HR for my birthday. You guys, I couldn’t have been more ecstatic to receive something I knew would help me.  After 9 years together this is still one of my favorite gifts he has purchased for me.

Do you use a Fitbit to track your health and fitness goals?

Since this day my fitness tracker has served me well in tracking my exercise activity, heart rate, sleeping patterns and so much more. It has truly become a part of my everyday life and helping me stay on track with achieving my goals. You can imagine my disappointment when my Fitbit’s digital screen display started to breakdown recently.

Even when fully charged, different pixels would disappear from my display screen. This made it really hard to read anything shown on the screen. Although the gadget was still tracking my activity, I could no longer use it for telling time or viewing my text messages. This had become an inconvenience in my new everyday normal routine. If I wanted to continue to enjoy these features in my life, I needed to start planning and saving for a new fitness tracker very soon.

How do you plan for the repair or replacement of your fitness tracker?

I started researching new fitness trackers and noticed many pages advertising extended warranties or insurance plans for Fitbits. I never did get to see the original purchase paperwork, so I wondered if my SO purchased one of these plans for my Fitbit.  In the past, we tended to lean towards purchasing protection plans but not for everything.

After inquiring with him he thought he did purchase a protection plan but didn’t have the proof of purchase. So we decided to search through his e-mailed receipts and Amazon purchases to find out more about the extended warranty he potentially purchased.  Luckily, we were able to find proof of purchase for an Asurion 3 year extended protection plan that was for my Fitbit Charge 2 HR. We also learned a valuable financial lesson that day that we will be sharing with you later.

What is the Asurion 3 Year Personal Care Extended Protection Plan?

We learned that the Asurion 3 year personal care extended protection plans would cover the cost of repairing, replacing or reimbursement of my fitness tracker due to experiencing a breakdown of certain sorts. If they were not able to repair my item then they would either provide a replacement Fitbit or we would be reimbursed the original purchase price. To have our Fitbit serviced we just needed to file a claim and follow the prompts.

We decided to file a claim online through the Asurion website. In order to complete our claim we just had to answer a few quick questions. We found the process, overall, to be pretty simple and quick from the start. After our claim was submitted the Fitbit needed to be shipped to the nearest service center. The plan even covered the cost of shipping and provided me with a shipping label. It didn’t take long for me to pack up the item and drop it off at my local post office.

Within 24 hours after shipping our item, we received confirmation that they had received our item and would proceed to inspect and service the Fitbit. Within the next 48 hours, we received confirmation that our item was not repairable and we would receive a full refund of the original purchase price for my Fitbit Charge 2 HR.

Did I really get to replace my fitness tracker for FREE?

My significant other’s decision to purchase the Asurion 3 year extended protection plan played an important role in our overall experience. Along with the timing of my Fitbit breaking down, this protection plan truly saved us time and money.

When using my refund, I was able to purchase the new Fitbit Charge 3 HR, a new wristband and another Asurion 3 year extended protection plan for just $20.00!

This whole experience was a positive one due to planning ahead and taking a risk. We understand that timing was also important in this experience as we may not be as lucky next time. We learned some financial lessons during this experience and have been working to incorporate them into our financial planning and decision making.

Complete These Small Tasks After You Purchase Your Protection Plans!

  • Understand Your Plan’s Terms and Conditions

Take the time to actually review and read the terms and conditions of your product or plan. This is where you can learn more about what your protection covers and how they will cover your damaged products.  Additionally, you can find out more about the type of damages that are not covered and how to file a claim if you need to. Always try to download, bookmark or print an extra copy for easy and quick access for later reference.

  • Photograph Your Products

It is never a bad idea to take images of your products when you receive them after purchase. These photographs can serve as proof of purchase, state of condition, and product identification. These photographs can become helpful if your product ever gets lost, stolen or damaged. Photographs of your products should be stored in a secure and accessible location with all other product documents.

  • Store and Secure Product Documents

This experience did make us realize how much time we wasted looking for important documents on our plan. Luckily we were able to locate all the information we needed by a few searches on the web. Moving forward we will be keeping all receipts, product manuals, warranties and protection plan policies located in one easy and secure location. There are multiple ways you can store your documents. Choose what works best for you to be able to quickly and easily access the file when needed.

  • Start Planning Ahead

This time we really got lucky with my Fitbit breaking down within my protection plans service dates. Next time we may be fully responsible for the repair or replacement of my Fitbit. This understanding pushed us to create a sinking fund for our next fitness tracker. Especially if our current protection plan coverage expires or the type of damage done to the tracker is not covered.
