My Website Mistake

In the last few years, I have thought of multiple small businesses I would love to venture into.  A year ago, I decided to follow my love of Art. That was when I established my mixed media Art Business. I knew that creating the product was only part of my business. I knew that I would need to market my business to introduce my product to more individuals. Part of my marketing strategy was to have more presence online.  I decided to create a website for my business. I had many ideas on how I can utilize my website to build my audience. With much enthusiasm and eagerness and the will to learn, I created my website through wordpress.com.

Much of my spare time was devoted to getting the website designed, writing on art-related topics and managing various Social Media accounts. Additionally, I spent time learning how I could apply my marketing ideas onto my website. That is when I found out that I was losing out on potential revenue by not utilizing a self-hosted site like WordPress.org.

By choosing WordPress.org to build my website, I would have had more flexibility and revenue opportunities. However, I would have needed to find someone to host my website and that would come at a small price.

My issue at the time was that I was trying to do everything the cheap and easy way! Yes, I said it! I realized that by going that route, I was not truly mentally putting the value in my business. I envisioned my business growing long-term. If I wanted my business to grow long-term then I would need to learn to invest in the development of my dreams.

Lessons Learned

Learning from my past mistake, I set out to build a website the opportunist way! This time, I would utilize WordPress.org but would need to find a host first.  Through my search for a host, I found Bluehost. Bluehost currently serves over 2 million websites with their hosting needs. After researching more about Bluehost, I had no doubt that they were going to be my hosting solution for my next small business website.

Bluehost is a great web host and I have had a very enjoyable experience with them. I even saved on my budget by investing in Bluehost for my hosting needs.

How To Start A WordPress Website on Bluehost

1. Getting Started

When you arrive at Bluehost’s home page, click on the green “Get started now” button. This will bring you to the next page to choose your plan.

When it comes time to choose your plan, Bluehost will showcase three different hosting plans. The Basic plan should be sufficient enough for any small business website. However, your specific business will determine your hosting needs.

2. Register your domain name.

The next step after selecting your hosting plan will be registering your domain name. You will have two options: register a new domain or transfer an existing domain. Typically businesses will use their business name as their website domain. If you have not decided on a name yet, make sure you put much thought into it beforehand as it can have an impact on your branding.

Once your domain name is available or accepted, you will register your account and make a payment.

3. Build Your Site.

After you have created your account and registered your domain, it is time to get your website set up. I loved the designing part of my website. I chose a free theme that looked professional. WordPress makes it very easy to build your website uniquely with different plugins.

If your not a designer, don’t worry! There are many great designers who will work with you to build your best site. When you choose to purchase a website design you will see an increase in your business expenses temporarily. The great news is that there are multiple professionally designed websites available for any budget!

Once you have installed your new theme, you will now have access to the tools needed to build your business’s website. These tools will allow you to build your website’s pages, a navigation system, and your business’s e-commerce. WordPress and Bluehost, both provide many tutorials on how to utilize these tools.

Congratulations, after building your website you are ready to Launch it! By launching your website, you have made it public and opened the doorways to many new opportunities in cyberspace.
